Why Mathematics? Mathematics is a subject one can relate in his day to day life. One may not need to calculate distance to moon in his everyday life but definitely to manage money in his accounts, deal with taxes and pay the bills. Scope of Mathematics? Be it physics (understanding kinematics), share market, real estate (appreciation and depreciation), banking (calculating interest, profit, loss), reasoning (understanding series and sequence), mathematics allows to do the talks which only few claim to be expert of. You then belong to classes and not the masses. Is it Easy? The general impression is that it's the toughest and most challenging subject whereas I strongly believe mathematics is just not only about learning formulas and theorems to gain marks in exams but be able to derive the theorems from scratch using practical examples from real world. So effort should be to invoke mathematical and rational thinking rather than mug up the results and believe what's written in the books For example: while working on profit and loss one should understand that profit and loss are calculated with respect to cost price(C.P.) alone. Thus, Profit % = (Profit/C.P.)/100. But, in case where selling price (S.P.) is mentioned instead of cost price, one may be puzzled? Simple, Profit % = [(S.P.-C.P.)/C.P.]/100 (i). On the contrary if concept is not clear one has to learn yet another formula to solve this problem which is C.P.=S.Px[100/ (100+Profit%)] which is nothing but derived from (i). This helps student to understand the subject with less complexity and ambiguity (more to understand and less to mug up). Most of the times the greatest problem which hits the students is that they know every formula and theory but fail to apply as per the question (it`s like having the medicine but not knowing the disease). Then it is very important is to apply solution by diagnosing the problem. I have heard that most people are afraid of mathematics, I believe the problem lies in the way it has been taught but not in the difficulty of subject and this can be taught in by way of several activities which helps to understand the concept. The key to learn mathematics efficiently is more and more practice. The more you familiarize yourself with problems the more your brain builds to get its solution and the way to achieve it.
